Unlock Your Android Smartphone Without a Passcode / Forgotten Password

If you’ve forgotten your code and can’t find a way around your Android smartphone’s forgotten password, you’ll need to find a way to get it back to normal. Your only option is to use recovery mode.

How do you boot into recovery mode on a Google Pixel or Nexus device?

If you have an Android device, such as a Google Pixel 4, Pixel 3, or something else, here are the steps needed to boot into recovery mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button and select Power off. (If the touchscreen isn’t responding, you can simply press and hold the Power button for several seconds until the device turns off.)
  2. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button. You should see a bunch of information about your device and start at the top of the screen.
(To scroll through the menu options, use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons. The Power button is used to make a selection. Press the volume button two or three times and you should see Recovery Mode at the top right. Press the Power button to select it.)
  3. The white Google logo will appear, followed by the Android mascot lying on its back with the words No command below it.
  4. Press and hold the Power button, then press the Volume Up button once while still holding the Power button.
You should see the Android system recovery options appear at the top of the screen. Use the volume buttons to highlight options and the Power button to select the one you want.

How do you boot into recovery mode on other Android devices?

Samsung Galaxy S10, S9, Note 10 and other Galaxy devices:

  1. Press and hold the Power button and select the Power off option. If the screen is frozen or not responding, you can press and hold the Power button for several seconds until the device turns off.
  2. Simultaneously press the Power button, the Volume Up button and the Home or Bixby button. Release when you see the Samsung logo. You can select the desired option in the menu using the volume buttons to highlight and the Power button to select.
Motorola One Zoom, Droid Turbo 2, Moto Z, Moto G (all generations) and other Motorola devices:
  • 1. Press and hold the power button and turn off your phone.
  • 2. Simultaneously press the volume down and power buttons until the device turns on.
    3. Use volume down to highlight recovery mode and the power button to select it.
OnePlus 7 Pro, 6T, 6, 5T and other OnePlus devices:
  1. Press and hold the power button and select Power off to turn off your OnePlus.
  2. Simultaneously press the power and volume down buttons.
  3. You can use the volume buttons to highlight an option and the Power button to select it.
HTC U12 Plus, U11, 10, One M9 and other HTC devices
HTC phones are a little different:
  1. Go to Settings > Battery and uncheck Fastboot.
  2. Turn off the device by pressing and holding the Power button.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button.
On the U11, you will need to highlight Reboot bootloader, then press Power to select it.
  4. You should see a bootloader screen where you can use volume down to highlight recovery, then the power button to select it.

LG G8 ThinQ, G7, V40 ThinQ and other LG devices:
  1. Press and hold the Power button and turn off the phone.
  2. Simultaneously press the Power button and the Volume Down button.
  3. When you see the LG logo, release the Power button and press it again (you must keep pressing the Volume Down button throughout).
  4. The menu appears and you can use the volume buttons to highlight an option and the Power button to select it.
  5. Recovery mode options.
The options presented to you may vary depending on your device, but some standards are always there. You can always choose from:
  1. Reboot system now: this will restart the device normally.
  2. Apply update from ADB: the Android Debug Bridge lets you connect your device to your PC and issue commands from there. It is designed for developers and requires you to install the Android SDK (Software Development Kit). (If you’re interested, you can learn more on the Android developers website.)
  3. Factory data reset: This will erase all your data – photos, videos, music, apps, everything – and restore your phone to its original state. It will also erase the cache partition.
  4. Wipe cache partition: This is temporary system data, largely related to app installations, and you can delete it without losing
